Concept Mode
The window list tells you what is open. Concept Mode helps you see what it means: which windows belong to which idea, what is done, what is next.
It is a mind map that sits beside your live window list. You drag windows, bookmark folders and saved sessions onto it, add your own concepts and notes, and connect them.
Open and close
- Click the orange wand at the top of Side View.
- Side View widens to fill most of the screen.
- Click the wand again, or Reset All Position, to go back to the normal list.
Concept Mode is only in Side View, not in the Popup or the browser side panel.
The three columns
| Column | What it is |
|---|---|
| Left: window list | The same live list as always. Nothing is ever removed from it by the map. |
| Middle: the map | Your mind map. It starts empty. |
| Right: library | Three tabs: Graphs (your saved maps), Bookmarks, Sessions. |
What goes on the map
Concepts
- Double-click empty canvas to make a new concept and start typing.
- The first concept is the main topic. It is orange and cannot be deleted.
- Other top-level concepts are cyan. Child concepts are paler.
- Checkboxes: select a concept and press
/to add a checkbox. Press/again to remove it. Click the box to tick it.
Notes
- Click the amber note button at the top right of the canvas.
- A note is a sticky for quotes, meeting notes or anything longer than a title. It shows a short summary until you edit it.
Embed cards: windows, bookmarks, sessions
| Card | How to add | Click it to |
|---|---|---|
| Window | Drag a window card from the left list. | Scroll the list to that window (and unfold it). |
| Bookmark | Drag a folder or single bookmark from Bookmarks on the right. | Open Bookmarks and scroll to it. |
| Session | Drag a session from Sessions on the right. | Open Sessions and scroll to it. |
- A badge in the corner tells the three kinds apart. Hover the title for the full name.
- Renaming an embed card renames the real thing: the window, the bookmark or the saved session.
- Deleting an embed card only removes it from the map. The real window, bookmark or session is untouched.
- Dragging the same thing twice just highlights the card that is already there.
- Embedding a session does not open it. To open it, use Session Manager.
Keyboard
Click the canvas first. When the map does not have focus, a blinking orange Shortcuts paused label shows at the top right. Click the canvas to turn shortcuts back on. While you are typing, keys go to the text.
Nothing selected
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
Space | Frame the main topic: left side, centered, normal zoom. |
Enter | Tidy the whole map with even spacing, then frame the main topic. |
Backspace / Delete | Delete the selected connection line. |
Something selected
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
Tab | New child concept under the selection. |
Enter | New sibling concept below (concepts only). While editing: finish. |
Shift+Enter | New line inside a concept. In a note, plain Enter makes a new line. |
Space | Edit the selected item's text or title. |
Esc | Stop editing but keep the selection. Press again to clear the selection. |
↑ ↓ | Move between sibling concepts. |
← → | Go to the parent concept, or to the first child. |
/ | Add or remove a checkbox on a concept. |
Backspace / Delete | Remove from the map. A concept takes its children with it. |
The ? button at the top right of the canvas shows all of this in the app.
Undo and redo
Click the canvas first, or use the two arrows at the top right.
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
⌘/Ctrl+Z | Undo the last change |
⌘/Ctrl+Shift+Z | Redo what you undid |
Ctrl+Y | Redo, too |
Each undo shows a small note at the top saying what was undone.
- What you can undo
- Adding, deleting and moving concepts, notes and cards
- The text of concepts and notes, one edit at a time
- Lines: adding, changing and deleting
- Rearranging with Enter, and checkboxes
- What stays as it is
- Renaming a window, bookmark or session: that changes the real name in your browser, so undo leaves it
- Windows you closed: undo brings the card back, shown as closed
- How long history lasts
- Each map keeps its own history, up to 50 steps
- Switching maps or reloading the page starts it fresh
Keeping cards in sync
In Graphs on the right, the Live map has an orange ripple on the left.
- While it pulses, window, bookmark and session cards keep up with their sources: titles, counts, and whether the source still exists.
- Click the ripple to pause. Cards freeze, which is handy while you rearrange. Click again to resume.
- If a source is gone, its card stays with a small ghost mark in the corner. Remove it yourself when you're ready.
The left window list is always live. The pause only affects cards on the map.
Saving maps
- Live is your working map. It is kept automatically and survives the browser closing or crashing.
- The save icon next to Live saves a copy as a named map. Saved maps appear under it in Graphs. You can rename or delete them there.
- A map is not a session. It stores the layout, notes, lines and cards, not your open tabs. To pack up your windows, use Sessions.
- Maps are stored on this computer only. They do not sync.
Ideas for using it
- One main topic per project. Under it, a concept per question, with the windows that answer it hanging off each one.
- Use checkboxes for a to-do outline next to the windows you're working in.
- Embed last week's saved session under "Background" so you remember it exists without opening it.
